Blue-Black and Blur: Carrie Mae Weems and the Afterlives of Images

Acclaimed scholar Tina Campt, Professor at Princeton University and this year’s Visiting Fellow, will offer her insights into her latest research on the “Afterlives of Images” in this special program. Following her lecture, she will engage in conversation with Rolando Vázquez Melken, Professor of Post/Decolonial Theories and Literatures at the University of Amsterdam, to delve into Campt’s recent studies and their related research on decolionality. The discussion will then be opened to the public for participation.

The annual Visiting Fellow program is a collaborative project between the Research School for Art History (OSK), the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, The Hague, and the University of Amsterdam. This year’s Visiting Fellow is Professor Tina Campt of Princeton University.

Professor Tina Campt is a feminist theorist on visual culture and contemporary art. She is one of the founders of Black European Studies. Her early work theorized gender, racial, and diasporic formations in black communities in Europe and Southern Africa with an emphasis on the role of local photography in historical interpretation. Campt’s more recent work conncects everyday imagery produced by Black people and the creative interventions of contemporary Black artists who are reshaping societal perceptions. Her research perspectives can be applied to some of the new works in our collection, such as Igshaan Adams’ Nama Stap.

About Tina Campt and Rolando Vázquez Melken

Tina Campt is Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor of Humanities. She holds a joint appointment between the Department of Art and Archeology and the Lewis Center for the Arts. Campt is lead convener of the Practicing Refusal Collective and the Sojourner Project. She began her career as a historian of modern Germany, earning a PhD in history from Cornell University.

Rolando Vázquez Melken is Professor of Post/Decolonial Theories and Literatures, with a focus on the Global South at the department of Literary and Cultural Analysis & the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). He is a teacher, decolonial thinker, and a regularly invited keynote speaker on decoloniality at academic and cultural institutions.
